A rich young ruler approached Jesus in Matthew 19:16-26 and wanted to add eternal life to all that he owned. Jesus instead offered him a straight across trade; all that the rich young ruler owned, plus his life and all of his devotion in exchange for eternal life. The rich young ruler went away empty handed for he was very rich and owned much property. I’m sure that fellow has had time to contemplate just how empty handed he was… or should I say,is.
It is sad to think how many evangelists today encourage people to ask Jesus INTO their lives. Jesus did not want into the rich young rulers life… Jesus wanted to BE his life!
Jesus also said:
Matthew 13:44-46
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
Gods free gift will cost you everything! When you exchange all that you have for eternal life, you will find you have what is of a lasting value and what is truly valuable!
Jesus also warned us in Luke 14:26-35 to count the cost to make sure we have what it takes to finish.
Colossians 3:1-4
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
If the concept of Gods free gift costing you everything is challenging, you are overrating what you are giving up and undervaluing what He is offering!
Romans 12:1 says that all of yourself, your whole life, IS an acceptable sacrifice. All of you sacrificed IS basic worship. How can we hold back? What does your life consist of that you would walk away from eternal life? Don’t regret your choices like the rich young ruler.
“Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” ~ Jesus
Psalm 16:11
You show me the pathways of life. In Your presence is fullness of joy, at Your right hand is pleasure for ever more.
