Lives of Pain is a song about the futility of existence on earth without Jesus Christ as your Lord God and Savior. Whether you are “successful” or indigent, it’s a life of pain (you are never satisfied) and then you die. But Jesus, while we were yet enemies, died for us. He took our pain and deserved punishment and paid the price for sin. He took the wrath of God for our sin upon Himself, purchased us, that we might be His own possession and heirs of His Kingdom.
The inspiration, if you will, for Lives of Pain came while I was working in my vocation. I was standing near a Native American cemetery. There were many graves with young people who died because of drugs, alcohol, and suicide. I watched a middle aged couple that “appeared” successful come and tend one of the overgrown graves. It was one of the most painful scenes. While they were not old, they looked very aged in their demeanor because of their visit. It would take several pages to describe the scene and their obvious pain. It was not a new grave but their pain was fresh. The graves had religious icons of several religions… trying to cover all the bases. It was very sad. People who are without hope, tending the graves of the hopeless. Real Lives of Pain.
